Chest Physical Therapy, or CPT, is an airway clearing technique that is utilized to drain mucus or secretions from the lungs. CPT typically employs percussions, vibrations, deep breathing, huffing or coughing, or airway clearing devices to clear the lungs. This therapy often benefits patients suffering from cystic fibrosis, degenerative neuromuscular disease, or other ailments that may affect the lungs.
Generally, CPT options focus on different positions and techniques that use gravity to drain mucus from the lungs. The two most common techniques are Postural Drainage and Percussion (PD&P) and the airway-clearing vest.
To aid in the percussions, vibrational devices and other techniques can also be used as a way to shake mucus into larger airways. The vibrational devices are used to tense and relax the muscles of the chest wall. Additionally, deep breathing can move loosened mucus and assist with coughing. To accomplish this, the caretaker should help the patient take deep breaths in order to get air into the lower lungs.
For all PD&P techniques, it is important to seek training and assistance from a licensed professional to determine the recommended treatment plan and to avoid causing any injury.
